This edition of the Meijin had 125 players. Kazuki Okamoto won the Meijin in 2012. The other finalist was Junya Ito. The two players also played in the final of the Othello World Cup in Tokyo last January. Junya was the winner there. Junya did not make it to the final this time. He lost the semifinal against Kohachi Fukunaga. More success for Kazuki, he beat Tamanaga in the semifinal and the final was a 35 - 29 win against Kohachi Fukunaga. Joanna William won the female Meijin title. Joanna was "Queen of Othello" at the OWC in January. Meijin-Sen History:
Check the final game of the first Meijin-Sen in 1980 here below. Suetsugu Kawamura won the first Meijin-sen and prolonged his title in 1981 and 1982. Masaaki Iwasaki was the runnerup in 1980, this year he was one of the crew.

Piamrat Kraikokit wins Thailand Othello Championship

34 players registered for this tourney. The champion of 2012, Piyanat Aunchulee was unable to prolong his title. This year also 1 foreign player: Romy Hidayat from Indonesia who won the playoff for 3rd place. The second game was an even game, but Piyanat was best at the endgame and won 33-31. Othello AmbassadorTo promote Othello at elementary schools, Shoko Nagakawa was appointed as othello ambassador in this year of the 40th anniversary of Othello. The Japanese Othello Association wants to boost after-school Othello activities. Shoko is a Japanese idol, actress and singer. She is best known as the presenter of Pokémon Sunday.

Nicky van den Biggelaar wins 65th Dutch Othello OpenBussum, Netherlands, March 24
Tourney format: 7 rounds Dutch Grand Prix 2013 tourney and also qualifier for Dutch Championship 2013 Mark van Heere tried his best in round 6, but Nicky played a nice no-corner win and as he was 2 points ahead of the other players, he was sure of this tourney victory. But Linda Praseptyo kept Nicky from a perfect score as she won her game against him in round 7. Well done Linda! |

Arthur Juigner wins Ile de France 2Paris, France, March 24
Tourney format: 5 rounds Arthur Juigner won this tourney, just like the previous Ile de France 1 in February. A very nice victory with 5 wins and the runnerup 2 points behind. Arthur also won the French Championship Qualification Tourney on March 16th. He is on a winning streak of 15 wins, no losses. Bintsa defeated Frédéric in the first round. Cecilia Norgren from Sweden lost 2 games 31 - 33 against Thierry and Marc. In the fifth and final round Arthur defeated Thierry and Marc lost his game against Frédéric. Tourney format: 7 rounds This tourney is part of the Italian Othello Grand Prix. The first picture I received showed that Francesco Marconi, winner of the EGP Prague, was "in da house". Francesco won the Udine tourney in 2012 and now also the 2013 edition. Ranking after 3rd round: Marconi leads with three points, Di Mattei 2nd with two points, Chiarulli 3rd with two points, and then Ilacqua and Puzzo with two points. Belgian Othello Association at "Made In Asia" Expo in Brussels
Just like last time, the Belgian Othello Association was present at the Made In Asia Expo in Brussels. Quite a number of people were interested to play Othello.
Othello Speed Flipping was introduced at the OCW in Tokyo in January and Tom Schotte brought a flipping set home. It featured as a very fun event at the exposition. There will be speed-flip competition at the Ghent Easter tournament on April 1st,

Tourney format: 11 rounds, final and playoff 3rd / 4th place This is the first tourney of the British Othello Federation in 2013. Real big Othello names, this was a very interesting tourney. They played 8 rounds on Saturday, Martin Ødegård won all his games and was well on his way to the final. But just like last weekend in Prague against Francesco Marconi, he lost the final in Cambridge against Emmanuel Caspard. |
