EGP Den Hoorn, 12 players ready to flip
Not a lot of players at this Dutch EGP, but the stakes are high! The top 4 of the 2014 EGP continue to battle for the prestigeous title of European Champion. Marc Tastet, Takuji Kashiwabara, Imre Leader and Francesco Marconi will do their best to win 200 more points.
Four of the attending Dutch players picked up EGP points earlier this year. 1 point for Erwin van den Berg (Cambridge) and Martin Fransen (Rome), 15 points for Roel Hobo (Cambridge) and 200 points for Nicky van den Biggelaar (winner Cambridge). If my maths are correct, Nicky could take the lead in the 2014 EGP if he wins the final against another Dutch player. I guess that is wishful thinking on my part. But..... Nicky did win the Cambridge EGP and last EGP in the Netherlands, Gouda 2012, was won by Patrick Aubroeck. Well, we'll see, and I wish all the players good luck. The tourney organisation has put a lot of effort into the event and I am sure it will be great Othello weekend with lots of fun and great games.
Othello News will play at the tourney as lowest rated player, there will not be a lot of time to write about the tourney. You will have to make do with the Othello News Twitter messages.

What a great location for a tourney. It takes a bit of planning to get there, but the site gave the tournament a pleasant holiday feel. Surrounded by the sea, amidst the fields with the famous Texel sheep, 12 players enjoyed the company and the mental battles. Compliments to Jan, Marcel and Martin for organising this event.
On day one Nicky won all his games, and I won my only game. Now maybe you would think winning 1/11 on a tourney like this can not be very stimulating, but I can tell you it was. This was my chance to play against Takuji, Marc, Imre and Francesco and to fight them on the board was just great. I totally enjoyed all my games.

Not a good start for Nicky van den Biggelaar on day 2 of the tournament, he lost his game against Marc Tastet 24 - 40. Marc seems to have a knack a beating the winner in the pre-rounds. So, next time you lose your game against Marc, don'worry, be happy.
Roel Hobo played an excellent tourney and I expected he would play in the final. After round 9 he was 1.5 points ahead of #3 Patrick Aubroeck. Round 10 was the turning point for him. He would have played a draw against Nicky, but......... lost on time. Patrick won against Takuji Kashiwabara in round 10, so only half a point left between Roel and Patrick. Martin Fransen killed Roel's changes for a place in the final 36 - 28 and Patrick won, though only just against Marcel Sneek who gave him a run for his money (31-33). Roel had to settle for a place in the playoff 3rd / 4th place. Francesco Marconi was the most likely candidate for the other spot in the playoff with 6.5 points after round 10. Two players right behind him with 6 points, Marc Tastet and Imre Leader. As it turned out they had to play against each other in the final round. Marc won this game 36 - 28. So now Marc had 7 points but Francesco played a solid game against Tees van Seggelen. Two Dutchies in the final and though Patrick managed to win final game 2 (31 - 33) after his loss in final game 1 (26 - 38), Nicky won his 6th EGP in game 3 (22 - 42). All finished just in time for some players to catch the 5 o'clock ferry to the mainland.

A bit of fun before the final. Patrick and Nicky acted as if they had allready started the game without tablejudge Jan de Graaf, who was still busy to set up the game at Liveothello.nl
