Arthur Juigner wins French Championship 2014
Location: Montbard, France
Date: September 13 - 14 Tourney format: 11 rounds and final, no playoff for 3rd / 4th place. Two pairs of brothers at this tourney, the Andriani's and the Juigner's. French champion of 2013, Takuji Kashiwabara is present to try to win the title for the 3rd time. A pitty that former champions like Marc Tastet, Stéphane Nicolet and Emmanuel Caspard are not present this weekend. Takuji Kashiwabara won 10.5 points in 11 rounds. He played a draw against Arthur Juigner in round 2. Arthur won all his other games, except in round 4 when he lost 21 - 43 against Arnaud Delaunay. The final started with a win for Arthur, the second game was for Takuji and the third game was again for 12 year old new French National Othello Champion Arthur Juigner. Bravo Arthur, well done! And let's not forget his younger brother Félix who impressed the other players and scored 6/11. According to data received from FFO, to be French National Othello Champion at the age of 12, sets a new national and world record. The previous record holder for France was Paul Ralle (age 16 in 1984). According to Roman Kraczyk (POL), the world record holder for National Champion was not Kunihiko Tanida (Japan National Champion at age 14 in 1982) as we reported earlier. Łukasz Szyszko was the Polish National Champion at age 11 in 2002. In total, Łukasz Szyszko won the National Championship 3 times. He stopped to play Othello at the age 17. It seems like the world record belongs to Lukasz. Maybe Félix Juigner wil beat the record in the years to come? |

European Grand Prix 2014, who will be the 2014 European Champion?
Next and final stage of the 2014 EGP is in Krakow Poland end of September. In the table above you can find a prognosis of the final score of the top 8 players. Ofcourse, we all know anything can happen at a tourney. Maybe the local Polish players will give the Othello elite a run for their money, but indulge me in a game of what if’s. If Nicky van den Biggelaar plays Krakow and wins, he will be the 2014 EGP Champion. Nicky only played in 2 of the 6 EGP tourneys, I hope he will show up in Krakow. I think it’s about time a Dutchman wins the EGP Championship (see table right). Next in Line is Takuji Kashiwabara, if he wins EGP Krakow it’s his 8th EGP Championship title. A tremendous accomplishment! Marc Tastet can be EGP champion when he wins Krakow, provided Nicky does not play against him in the final and takes 140 points. A second place for Takuji Kashiwabara would be no problem. Imre Leader would get 490 points if he won. We could have 3 people equal first with 490 if Imre wins in the final against Takuji and Nicky wins the playoff for 3rd place. That would be a spectacular end of EGP 2014. Marc Tastet informed me that there is a best of 5 scores EGP rule in case of a tiebreak, so that Takuji would be ahead of Imre and Nicky on tie-break. Things are a bit harder for Francesco Marconi, if he wins Krakow, he needs Nicky to do no better than 4th place and no 2nd place for Takuji Matthias Berg and Arthur Juigner, the EGP Stockholm finalists, best thing for them is to make it to the final together. If Nicky does not show up, or does not make it to the top 4, only a 3rd place by Takuji would be a threat to Arthur. Michele Borassi could win equal with Nicky, if Nicky doesn't show up and Takuji is not in the top 4, Marc not in the top 3, Imre, Francesco and Matthias not second. Maybe it's time to start an Othello News Betting Office? |
