Online match junior teams Czech Republic 5-11 Netherlands

On April 4th two junior teams from Israel and the Czech Republic played an online match that resulted in an 8-8 tie.  It was a very nice initiative from the Czech and Israel Othello Federations and I was sure many more such tournaments would follow. I did not have to wait long, another online match was played on Monday April 24th, this time the Dutch team challenged the Czech players.

The Dutch team won 11-5. Top scorers in the Dutch team: Wendy de Graaf and Anouk de Vries, both won 4 games. Top scorers on the Czech team: David Tran and Hana Vuong, they both scored 2 wins.

"Those are some really wonderful puzzles. My comments are designed not to spoil the puzzles (I hope) for someone reading them.

Firstly, they show how complicated positions can be with only 6 empty! And then, amazingly, with only 5 empty. And, and this is the key reason why the puzzles are so good, they are not just complicated for `counting' reasons but complicated for `ideas' reasons as well.

Secondly, I love the mix of ideas in the puzzles. Of the 6-empty ones, I especially love Problem 2, as one has to be so aware of how that complicated region to the North will play out. When Black does initiate play there, it is such fun that the various White replies to the (correct) Black move each have their own flavour and reason why they do not quite work for White! I also really like Problem 4, as it is just so complicated. That was the one that took me the longest, as one thinks `OK, if I go to X then his best response must be Y', and then one realises that in fact there are better responses than Y!

Among the 5-empty puzzles, I especially like Problem 6, as it is so `wild'. Also, Problem 9 is so clever, because once one has seen
the right thing to do then, with hindsight, it is so obvious. But before ones sees that there are many other interesting features that suggest other moves! Then Problem 8 is ridiculously cute (it made me laugh out loud), and Problem 10 is so unexpected -- again it makes such good sense, once one has worked it out, but initially it seems so odd.

It's such a pleasure to have so many actual ideas in puzzles that start as late as that."

Location: Örebro, Sweden
Date: April 8th

The players from Stockholm decided not to attend this tournament because of the terror attack in Stockholm on friday. Public transport was down anyway. With just 2 players from Örebro there, what can we say........

Thierry Lévy-Abégnoli wins IdF 3

Location: Paris, France
Date: April 8th
Tourney format: 5 rounds
Thanks to Bintsa Andriani for info and pictures

In March Thierry Lévy-Abégnoli won IdF2 with 5 points and he continued his winning streak at IdF3. But he had to fight hard, certainly no easy wins for him.

Runnerup was Marc Lévy and he impressed with his great performance at his first Othello on-the-board tournament. He plays a lot at Playok, that proves you can learn a lot from your opponents online.
Here  included is his 33-31 win against Michel Busuttil. He won with one second left on his clock ! He still has to learn how to note his transcripts and better manage his time, but he promissed he will return for future tournaments. Also included his 33-31 loss against Thierry.

To our many readers who play online but never go to on-the-board tournaments: the real battle is in the face to face match with your opponent. Much harder, but so much more rewarding. Have a look at our calender page or contact your national Othello Federation (Asia, Europe, Americas, Africa). Take the first step on your way to become National or World Othello Champion!

National Youth Teams Czech Republic - Israel play online

Two youth teams from the Czech Republic and Israel  played an internet Othello match on April 4th. What a great initiative! I think this was the first time in Othello history that teams of schoolchildren played Othello competitively via webcams.

The Israeli team started out strong with 4 wins in round 1. Yonathan Beeri won against David Tran. That was the only game David lost in the tournament.
The Czech kids won 3 games in round 2 and both teams scored 2 points in the third round.
Team Israel was ahead with 2 points at the start of the final 4th round. The Czech team fought hard in the final round and scored 3 more points.

Final score for both teams, a well deserved 8-8. Well done both teams!!!!
Michael Shifman (ISR) and David Tran (CZE) both scored 3 points. Two points for Hana Vuong (CZE), Jan
Rakušan (CZE), Danielle Yosifovich (ISR) and Or Shriebman (ISR). Yonathan Beeri (ISR) and Radek Šťastný (CZE) both scored 1 point.
