Takuji Kashiwabara wins European Grand Prix 2013Francesco Marconi was #1 in the EGP 2013 ranking ever since the first tourney in Prague, but there was still a chance for Takuji Kashiwabara to win. The draw final in Paris between Keita Ohmori and Takuji Kashiwabara made things very complicated. Check the info on our EGP Paris page. |
World Othello Championship rules
Dear all,
During last WOF Meeting in Leeuwarden, it was decided to ask the rule committee to review and propose updated WOC rules. The main discussion points were as followed:
1. Players with special needs
-> This technical point was suggested by Kelvin Yang and Randy Fang to have a written procedure dealing with handicapped players. We propose to add paragraph IV.10 to the rules.
2. Women's spot and team
-> Following last year discussion, we propose to slightly modify the team championship by allowing federations to send a full team (up to four players, no more than three being of the same gender) and counting the three best results for the team championship. That way, the women spot is no longer separated from the team.
3. Women's championship
-> Several proposals were made to change the format of the women's championship: separate rounds, semi-finals+finals, round-robin… We couldn't reach an agreement so we propose to discuss again at the next WOF meeting.
4. Taking transcripts
-> We didn't manage to arrive to a satisfactory solution last year and no new ideas emerged… so we propose to discuss again at the next WOF meeting.
You will find attached the proposed new set of rules, changes highlighted in red: paragraph IV.10 about players with special needs, and the modified team championship. Please review the rules and vote to accept or refuse each proposal.

Matthias Berg wins German National Othello ChampionshipKelbra, Germany, August 17th - 18th
Tourney format: 7 rounds and finals Not a big surprise that Matthias Berg won the German National Championship, but it was not an easy victory like in 2012. He lost 2 games on Saturday, against Daniel Rossler and Gunnar Bach. He would not have made it to the final if Gunnar Bach had not overlooked a swindle in his game in round 7 against Frank Zimmermann. Then the final would have been played between Daniel Rossler and Gunnar Bach. In the final (best of 3) on Sunday Matthias beat Daniel Rossler 2 to 1, Daniel won the first game but Matthias won the next two games and scured his 12th German National Othello Champion title. He won the championship every year since 2001, except for 2008, when Andreas Höhne won his second Champion title. Matthias will play at the WOC 2013 in Stockholm. Gunnar Bach has already cancelled. The rest of the players will evaluate in the next couple of weeks, but Matthias is confident that Germany will send 3 players to WOC this year. No female player has been selected yet. Mathias Andersson wins Göteborg OpenGöteborg, Sweden, August 3rd
Number of players: 6 This was Mathias' first tourney victory at Othello, congrats Mathias! Runner-up was Niklas Wettergren and third place for Oskar Eklund. "It was an exciting tournament where Mathias lead with 3 points after 3 rounds. Niklas defeated Mathias in round 4 and took the lead with 3.5 points. Both Mathias and Oskar had one loss (against Niklas). The final round 5 became a game for second place and a potential first place, if Niklas would lose to Michael. Michael played very well and won 28-36, which meant that the victory was between Oskar and Mathias who played a crucial match, where Mathias won out and took home his first tournament victory". report by Niklas Wettergren on SOF website |

New Page: European Grand Prix StatisticsOne of the Othello players who worked very hard to keep the Othello Wiki Book Project up-to-date, was Tom Schotte (Belgium). It really is a great pity that a valuable source of information as the Othello Wiki Book is gone forever, but Tom keeps digging in the Wiki Archives and has agreed to upload a lot of interesting stuff to this page in the months to come.
