The tourney started on Friday with a pre-tourney session at the Jardin de Luxembourg. It was a great setting, the palace, the garden, the sun, the chess and bridge players. Jaques Ovion was so kind to give me a little tour of this mind games playground. I noticed there were mostly men at chess and go, the ladies seemed to stick at bridge. I played some nice games against Marc Tastet, beat him 43-21 before two narrow losses 30-34 and 31-33. Marc claimed this practice inspired him to his undefeated victory. I don't mind at all taking the credit for that :). Roel Hobo did more of a training session with me, his explanations about the ins and outs of certain moves were really great. On Saturday all eyes were on Miroslav Voráček and Takuji Kashiwabara, but Marc Tastet took the undefeated first place. Behind him with 5 points Arnaud Delaunay and Mitsuaki Takigawa. Takuji had 4.5 points and Miroslav had 4. |

Miroslav Voráček won only 2 more points in the 4 rounds on Sunday and did not secure a spot in the top 4. Despite his great performances in Prague, Madrid and Berlin, it was just not enough for the EGP Championship.
Takuji won 3 more points and with a total of 7.5 points he made it to the final and was certain of winning the European Championship, for the 9th time! Bravo, what a great European Champion. Marc Tastet won another 4 games and qualified for the final undefeated. Marc won both final games and secured his undefeated victory of the Paris EGP. He scored 13/13, which he had never done before at the EGP. In fact, according to Marc, he had done it only twice before, in Lyon in 1996 and in Strasbourg in 1997. There was a message on the FFO mailinglist by Emmanuel Lazard in which he requested a doping test for Marc. Francesco Marconi will be very interested to hear this bit of news. He told me that Othello News needs a special Othello gossip column. Maybe he will help me out and start a column, "Everything you always wanted to know about the Othello players, but were afraid to ask"? Arnaud Delaunay and Roel Hobo qualified for the playoff, which was won by Roel Hobo. Top 4 EGP Paris:
