Yasushi Nagano wins 13th Shinagawa New Year’s Cup
Location: Shinagawa, Tokyo
Date: January 3rd Format: 7-round Swiss, 20 minutes per player Link: Murakami blog Report by Takeshi Murakami 67 players competed in the first tournament of the year. The winner Yasushi Nagano, repeated his winning streak, beating Yusuke Takanashi in round 6 and Tetsuya Nakajima in round 7. Second place for Takeshi Murakami who lost to Yusuke Takanashi in round 3 but won all the other games. Third place for Kenta Kiyonobu who lost to Hiroto Nagao in round 2 but won all the rest, notably beating Takanashi 32-32 in the last round. Fourth place for Tetsuya Nakajima who's only loss until round 7 was to Takanashi in round 5. With his large disccount Nakajima would have won the tournament had he defeated Nagano in the last round. But Nagano was invincible; 35 to 29 to Nagano. Fifth place for Takanashi who won all his games until round 6, when he lost to Nagano and then to Kiyonobu. Female champion was Yukiko Tatsumi with 4 wins and 3 losses. In some Japanese tournaments a special rule is used to avoid draws. Before each game the higher ranked player (the one who has a higher dan, or if the two players have the same dans then the older one) hides a disc in his palm. The other player tells which color is facing the top. The higher ranked player then reveals the disc to see if the guess of the other is correct. If it is correct then the player who guessed correctly has the right to choose the color for the game, or the win in case of draw. If it is not correct the right to choose goes to the player who hid the disc in his palm. Top 8 of 67 players 1. Yasushi Nagano 7 wins, 474 pts 2. Takeshi Murakami 6 wins, 1 loss, 438 pts 3. Kenta Kiyonobu 6 wins, 1 loss, 415 pts 4. Tetsuya Nakajima 5 wins, 2 losses, 512 pts 5. Yusuke Takanashi 5 wins, 2 losses, 495 pts 6. Takanune Iijima 5 wins, 2 losses, 450 pts 7. Shoutarou Tsuchiya 5 wins, 2 losses, 443 pts 8. Makoto Suekuni 5 wins, 2 losses, 430 pts … |
