European Grand Prix 2014 - Cambridge
winner: Nicky van den Biggelaar (NLD)
Cambridge, United Kingdom, 1 - 2 March 2014
European Othello Champion for 3 years in a row Takuji Kashiwabara will surely want to win that prestigious prize again this year. Who else? Francesco Marconi who came so close to winning the title last year? Marc Tastet seems eager to take on the challenge, or will the EGP 2014 winner be one of the Dutch travelling Othello circus? Go team Netherlands!!! The opening event of the 2014 European Othello Grand Prix takes place at Trinity College in Cambridge (UK). The format consists of an eleven round Swiss-system, seven games on the Saturday (three morning and four afternoon) and the remaining four on Sunday morning. Sunday afternoon the top two players play a best of three games final. There is also a single game 3rd / 4th play-off. Further information can be found on the BOF website. The rules of the European Grand Prix can be found here. |

The first international tournament of Cambridge took place 30 years ago (it was a 1-day tournament). Two participants from 1984 played at the 2014 tourney like they had never left: Imre Leader and Emmanuel Lazard! Their game in round 3 was a 46 - 18 win for Imre Leader.

A very good start of the second tourney day for Nicky van den Biggelaar, he won all his game and made it to the final as topscorer with 9 points. His two loses were in round 2 against David Beck and in round 4 against Takuji Kashiwabara. Imre Leader was the best player of the first day, but on day 2 he lost against Nicky and Emmanuel Caspard. But he made it to the final and the battle is on!!!! I am sure he will be eager to win the EGP in his own university town.
Latest update: Nicky van den Biggelaar (NLD) has won the 2014 British EGP by beating Imre Leader (GBR) 39-25, 18-46, 33-31 in the final.

Playoff 3rd / 4th place
Final EGP Cambridge: Nicky van den Biggelaar - Imre Leader
The EGP Cambridge 2014 has the same winner as the previous edition in 2012 but not the same two finalists. In 2012 Imre Leader played in the playoff 3rd/4th place, which he lost against Francesco Marconi. Nicky's opponent in the final was Takuji Kashiwabara.
This years final was exciting till the end. In the final game, at move 56 with 5 minutes on the clock, Imre Leader missed a drawing move. According to Marc Tastet at LiveOthello he didn't try to count but apparently just assumed that B1 was obviously better than C1 because it saves B column for white. The 14th game of the tourney-weekend, anything can happen.....

"I just _could not_ think", Imre leader about the final game of the Cambridge EGP
Many players have asked me: `Why didn't you count the position at move 56 in the Cambridge Final?'.
The answer is not that I looked at the position and decided not to count it. And it is not that I counted it but got it wrong. Rather, it is that I was so exhausted that there was just no question of counting it.
As evidence that this is not too uncommon in final games of EGP tournaments, I recommend reading an article written by Graham Brightwell for the British Othello Newsletter back in 1991. It is called `It's 1-1 and the tension is mounting', and is exactly about what happens at the end of the 14th game of an EGP tournament. Here is Graham talking about Paris 1989, when it was his turn to play at move 56 in the final game. He has two possible moves, and decides to count the more forcing line.
"Half-way through counting it, I stopped, and started trying to count the other one. I aborted that too, and went back to check what the two possibilities were. I looked at both the lines, and told myself that all I had to do was count one. I looked at the clock: enough time. Started to count: failed. Tried the other line: I couldn't get beyond the second move of the sequence. Looked at the clock. Of course the entire room was gathered around watching, and one thing I was able to think was that at least ten people knew what the right move was. Cursed inwardly. Looked at the clock. Not so much time now. So I played one."
[He chose the wrong one, but then his opponent, Murakami, lost on time at move 59!]
When I went back to read this article, I saw one thing that made me laugh a lot. Graham quotes a player in this situation as saying "I just _could not_ think". And that player is me.
