Nicky van den Biggelaar wins 76th Dutch Othello Open
Location: Lexmond, The Netherlands
Date: June 28th
Tourney format: 7 rounds
NOV website: results per round
Eight players traveled to Lexmond for the 76th Dutch Othello Open, Frauke even travelled all the way from Belgium.
Not a great surprise that Nicky won the tourney with 7 wins. Erwin van den Berg was runner-up with 6 points and Patrick Aubroeck and Marcel Sneek shared the third place. It was overall a very good tourney for Marcel Sneek with 4 wins. He won against Trees (a revenge for EGP Den Hoorn), Frauke, Jan and a fabulous 54-10 win against Patrick Aubroeck.
Dorpshuis Het Bosch in Lexmond is always a very nice location for a tourney, we had not expected that there would be live-music in the afternoon. I think the music gave the tourney that real summer feel, especially the etnic music from Southeast Asia.

Lari Pihlajapuro wins Nordic Championship 2015Location: Åland Islands, Finland
Date: June 27th - 28th Tourney format: This year the Nordic championships will be an open tourney. All players will participate in a swiss tourney from which the top 4 Nordic players will continue to the finals and fight for the title of Nordic Champion. Games on LiveOthello Thirty years ago, Henrik Vallund from Denmark organised the first Nordic Championship. Henrik won the Championship in 1998. At this 31st edition in 2015, 6 previous Nordic Champions participated (must be a record). This year the tourney organisation was in the hands of Lari Pihlajapuro and Lari won his second Nordic title. I had hopes that this year we'd have our first lady champion, it did not quit happen, but Katie made it to the top 4. It was a very tough competition with 20 of the best Nordic players. Oskar Eklund was ahead and unbeaten after the seven rounds of the first day. The second day of tournament was not his best. He collected just 1 more point but that was enought to make it to the final. He lost the final against Lari with 2-0. Martin Ødegård won the playoff for 3rd place against Katie Wu. The Swedish team won the team competition. Johannes Ødegård, Martin's younger brother, took pictures and we are happy to have such great photo's of the players to show you. More pictures by him are posted on Facebook.

Tintin Eng wins Stockholm Barbeque Open
Location: Stockholm, Sweden
Date: June 14th Tourney format: 7 rounds Jan Zemelka played 3 draw games. The tournament director is curious to know if any player ever had 3 draws in a 7 round tournament. Maybe it is some kind of "record". Only 1 draw for Tintin Eng (against Marcus Frönmark in round 2), 5 wins and 1 loss (in round 5 against Daniel Turunen). He was the winner of this very nice Swedish Othello event. After 6 rounds Tintin and Daniel both had 4,5 points and the exact same mbq! Tintin played against Benkt in round 7 and Daniel played against Erik. Tintin managed to get 5 more discs from his opponent. It was a memorable tournament, with over flying helicopters (royal wedding), bagpipe players, Hare Krisna chanters, mewing cats and the normal hum of tourists in Västerlånggatan. Ranking of the 10 players after round 7: 1: 5.5 pts [430] ENG Tintin (1492) {SWE} [425] TURUNEN Daniel (1459) {SWE} 3: 5. pts [423] EVERTS Jeroen (5231) {SWE} 4: 4.5 pts [423] FRONMARK Marcus (1454) {SWE} 5: 3.5 pts [350] GARDEBRINK Christian (1505) {SWE} 6: 3. pts [367] STEENTOFT Benkt (1301) {SWE} [341] JOHANSSON Erik (1493) {SWE} 8: 2.5 pts [345] ZEMELKA Jan (1533) {SWE} [339] KJELLBERG Arvid (1599) {SWE} 10: 0. pt [267] FAHLESON Rikard (150045) {SWE} |

Tom Schotte wins 14th Frisian Championship
Location: Langweer, The Netherlands
Date: June 14th Tourney format: 25 players, 6 rounds It was once again a great cosy tournament at Langweer. No sunshine this time, but the sun will be back next year for sure! Many local players from Langweer, but also a large delegation from Alkmaar participated this competition. But at the end it was Tom Schotte from Belgium who became Frisian champion 2015. There were quite some close matched throughout the tournament. Especially the top three could have been the other way round. Tom won 31-33 against Marcel and 34-30 against Jan, while Jan only had a narrow win of 31-33 against Marcel. Holbe Kuperus was 'best of the rest' and won the open category, just ahead of Monique Waterlander . Anne Dorbeck was the best primary school student, runner-up was Anouk de Vries. |

Belgian Othello Association presents the EGP Ghent poster |
Earlier this week the Belgian Othello Association presented the official poster for the 2015 Ghent European Grand Prix Othello.
A special thanks went to Marcel Peperkamp for the design, to François Juigner for the players pictures and to the EGP Ghent sponsors. Othello News is not featured on the poster, but I will be there and try hard to beat my last EGP score (Den Hoorn 2014). With just the 1 point, I can totally forgive Tom Schotte for not featuring me on the poster :) Next European Grand Prix tourney is in Athens, Greece, July 4 - 5 |
