Rikard Fahleson wins Swedish Championship for Beginners

Location: Stockholm Sweden
Date: August 30th

Results of the junior division:
1. Julie
2. Fanny
3. Blenda

Semifinal:
Blenda - Julie 29-35

Final:
Julie - Fanny 44-20
"I have been a table judge in many world championships and other major tournaments. But the semi-final was the absurd funniest thing I have been through as a table judge. I was doubled over with laughter, not because of the game but because of remarks of the three girls. And to hear one nine year old player with 7 empty squares say "oh, I should probably hurry thinking, now I just have 9 minutes left."
Benkt Steentoft
"If you believe that math, physics, chemistry or life is hard then I got a challenge for you. Try taking transcript of an Othello game between two 8-9 year old girls that barely know the rules. Laughters, random comments, flipping errors and much more whilst playing at the speed of light."
Arvid Kjellberg

XOT - random position openings
Hi All,

We had a surprisingly fun tournament in LA, considering there were 3 work-related cancellations and in the end we only had 5 players. The venue was fun and the food was great. Mo Li and his wife Sarah Bentolila were excellent  hosts.

Everyone won at least 1.5 games, and my biggest scare of the tournament was in a game with Stephen Ross, in his first tournament!  Richie Gilliland was also a new tournament player. And this was Sarah Bentolila's first American tournament.

It looks like an Othello club is starting up for the LA area, with maybe monthly meetings. Discussions will start soon, email me if you or someone you know wants to be kept in the loop.

It turned out that when I mentioned that players could play XOT in a game if both players wanted to, nobody preferred the classic starting
configuration. Everyone preferred to play XOT in every game. That was fun.

Defeat the foreign people one after another, with the aim to become World Champion!

Don't we all want to be Othello World Champion?

Maruko Kozakai, a reporter for the Japanese web magazine “Daily Portal”, likes Othello.  She enjoyed the game when she was a child, maybe because she used to win most of her games.

She feels herself to be talented, and one day she decides to visit Ueno Park in Tokyo and challenge as many foreigners as possible, in the hope of beating them all and so become the World Champion... at Ueno Park. One country after another is defeated by this cunning player.

The Ueno Park World Champion then decides to challenge Japanese players. On page 4 she writes about her experience in Shinagawa, where she played in a tournament for the first time in her life. Lots of pictures, including those of Nakajima, Tanida, Murakami and many other players appear in this article.

Have the article translated by your webbrowser, it's really fun to read !

Göteborg Othello Open: only two players

Location: Gothenburg, Sweden
Date: August 8th
Tourney format: 3 rounds
Info: SOF website and FB event

This certainly was not the main Othello event of the year 2015. Only 2 players showed up. It's always hard to organise events during the summer holidays.
For those who like me have been waiting for days to find out who won:
Round 1: Eklund-Ribguth 47-17
Round 2: Ribguth-Eklund 23-41
Round 3: Eklund-Ribguth 40-24
  1. Oskar Eklund 3 pts
  2. Michael Ribguth 0 pts
Oscar played at the EGP Ghent and finished 13th out of 41 players with 6 wins out of 11. He sure would have liked some more competition in Göteborg.

NYC Othello Pre-tourney Meetup

On August 7th, a couple of Othello players met up at the atrium area at Rockefeller Plaza. Among them Jian Cai (WOC Ladies 2011), Brian Rose (WOC 2001), Jerry Hai and Eugene Plummer.  Vlad Petric came later as did a couple of Jian's colleagues. The US National Championship will take place in New York, August 22nd - 23rd.
Jerry Hai posted these pictures on Facebook.

Did you know that.................

  • The Ghent European Grand Prix tournament was the best attended Belgian tournament ever (41)
  • The Netherlands broke a record that stood for 27 years? United Kingdom attended the Paris EGP in 1988 with 13 players, while the Netherlands had 19!!! representatives in Ghent
  • The record of most EGP victories present a tournament has been broken? (60), beating the Cambridge 2014 record of 59. Of course this record will be broken many times in the future, but now Ghent holds it for at least 4 weeks...
  • The Juigner brothers - nearly- broke the record of won games in the Swiss. They collected 14 points, while the record is 14.5. I bet one day they will break this record.
  • Takuji Kashiwabara is the first to score more than 10000 EGP points? (10152), he crossed this barrier in Athens EGP
  • Nicky van den Biggelaar has won his last 4 EGP tournaments he played (2014-2015)? Michele Borassi won 6 consecutive tournaments he played (2008-2009) and Emmanuel caspard 5 (1998-1999)
  • Nicky van den Biggelaar reached the top 3 in the last 12 EGP tournaments he played and won 6 of them.
  • Adding the 41 players of Ghent, it seems we are heading towards the best attended EGP season in 6 years! (~21 players / tournament)

The EGP Championship will be decided this August. The battle was on in Ghent and  next stop is Paris.

Ghent meant no extra points for Takuji, Francesco and Imre (top 4 tourneys). With Ben Seeley present at the Paris tourney, it will be a hard job to win the so much needed 200 points to defeat Miroslav Voráček. What ever happens, Paris EGP will be an exciting tournament. Othello News will be there to interview the winner and hopefully win 1/11.

Singapore National Othello Championship 2015 (SNOC 2015) marked the 8th time Othello Organisation (Singapore) was hosting the tournament. This year a total of 30 participants including the top 20 players in Singapore graced the event. After a total of 7 rounds of Swiss Pairing , Semi-Finals 1 was contested by Koh Bo Chao (SNOC 2014 Champion) and his younger Brother Koh Bo Xiang (SNOC 2010 Champion) while Semi-Finals 2 was between Romy Hidayat and Roy Lin . The Women's Finals was contested between Jolin Ng and Xinyi Lim . Although Alex Koh was the one who Ranked first after 7 Rounds of Swiss Pairing, it was his younger brother who got the better of him and edged him 34-30 in Semi-Finals 1. Roy Lin, a former Singapore Schools Othello Champion ousted Romy Hidayat from Indonesia in Semi-Finals 2 with a score of 37-27. The Women's final was swept home by Jolin Ng with a score of 55-9 stamping her authority as a 6-time National Female Champion. The 3rd / 4th match was a close match between Alex and Romy which ended in a draw. Alex finished 3rd place ahead of Romy due to the draw win rule following the Swiss Pairing Rankings. Roy Lin being a first time SNOC Semi-finalist continued his dream run into the first finals of his Othello career to challenge 2010 Champion Koh Bo Xiang. The game was fiercely contested from start to finish only to end in a surprising manner when Roy Lin made a mistake giving the win to Koh Bo Xiang with A score of 47-17. This was the Second National Championship title Bo Xiang has won and he Joins Li Junfeng (2 titles) and Makoto Suekuni (4 titles) as the only 3 multiple National / Open Championship title holders.
