Woramet Hempijit won all his games in the swiss rounds and qualified to play in the final. His opponent in the final was Anon Hongthong who scored 6 wins
Woramet won the first game in the final. The second final game was the only loss for Woramet at this tournamen but the third game was another win.

The playoff for 3rd and 4th place was between Piamrat Kraikokit and Charinee Mitmean who both won 5 games in the swiss rounds. Charinee won the playoff 41-23.
Piyanat Aunchulee and Patcharaporn Tana both had 4.5 points. I think at least for Piyanat it was a disappointing result.

Final tournament July 22:

1: 4 pts [197] RALLE Paul (1) {FRA}
               [194] TASTET Marc (2) {FRA}
3: 3 pts [185] CASPARD Emmanuel (355) {FRA}
               [170] LEVY-ABEGNOLI Thierry (3598) {FRA}
5: 1 pt [94] TASTET Rémi (50053) {FRA}

It was obvious that Paul Ralle was not so rusty, 12 years after his last official tournament. Paul lost to Marc who lost against Thierry and this is all the info you need to reconstruct all the results. Note that the final ranking corresponds exactly to the order of the WOF player id-number: it was the experience that has prevailed at this tournament (as the number is smaller, the older it is).

results will be posted on our EGP Berlin page

Stage 6 of the 2017 EGP will take place at the end of this week, in Berlin. Before the Aland tournament, I wrote that I thought the EGP 2017 would go to either Kashiwabara, Tastet or Berg. But then, Imre Leader won the Aland tournament and he seems to be in great form. Were he to win Berlin and then Ghent.......... I don't want to knock any player off my top 3 list. I will just make it a top 4. Good luck to Marc Tastet, Matthias Berg, Imre Leader and the other two registered players, Sverre Tvedt and Stefan Murawski. Takuji Kashiwabara was stopped at the Lufthansa check-in counter on Friday, he had failed to notice that his passport expired a month ago, no EGP for him tis weekend.

Matthias Berg lobbied hard to get the EGP to Germany and the first German EGP was in 2008. Matthias hoped to enspire players to take part in German and foreign EGP's. This EGP just 1 other German player will show up at the Berlin EGP. Due to
Local players EGP 2017:
Prague: 18 out of 44
Athens: 7 out of 10
Barcelona: 3 out of 9
Oslo: 8 out of 17

Aland: 2 out of 15
Berlin: 2 out of 5
Ghent: expects 11 out of 35
Paris: expects 8+ out of 20+
Local players EGP 2016:
Rome: 16 out of 22
Cambridge: 13 out of 19 (a lot of juniors)
St. Petersburg: 13 out of 19
Copenhagen: 4 out of 18
Warsaw: 7 out of 11
Stockholm: 14 out of 10
Amsterdam: 10 out of 18
The main problem of the EGP in my view is the dwindling number of players that is interested to play at least 4 EGP's in a year. This year we have Kashiwabara, Tastet, Berg and Leader. In 2016 we had just 3: Kashiwabara, Schotte and Tastet. In 2015 Kashiwabara, Voracek, Marconi, Tastet and Leader. In 2014 Kashiwabara, Tastet, Leader and Marconi. In 2013  Kashiwabara, Marconi,  Odegard, Tastet and Hobo. In 2012 Kashiwabara, Tastet, Marconi, Hobo and Fransen.

I think the EGP is the engine to boost Othello in Europe. Two top priorities are: attract more players to their national EGP and get more players to play at least 4 EGP's a year. It will make the tourneys more interesting, the fight for the championship will be harder. There is a lot we can learn from the players that have been around for years like Takuji Kashiwabara, Marc Tastet, Imre Leader and Francesco Marconi. Players love to share their expertise and their love of the game with others. The Othello crowd is small in Europe, but great fun to hang out with.

Take a look at Tom Schotte's EGP Statistics page for more numbers.

EGP Did You Know? by Tom Schotte
  • Lari Pihlajapuro spent 13 years and 82 days between his two silver medals. He joins Didier Piau, Dominik Nowak, Arthur Juigner and Jeroen Everts who have lost two finals without winning one.
  • Imre Leader claimed his 18th victory, but it took him 6 years and 48 days after number 17. This is not his longest 'in between wins' period: Between his 7th (1993) and 8th (2001) win more than 8 years passed.
  • With participating in Aland, Marc Tastet is the first player to have played in all organising countries (15).
  • Imre Leader took another record though: the one of the oldest winner. With a considerable age of 53 and 231 days he overtakes Marc Tastet, who is still the oldest player to become 2nd, 3rd and 4th in a tournament.
  • Aland had only 1 player with the Finnish nationality. This only happened to one other country in history before: Belgium in 1993 where the very brave Alain Daix was present.
  • Jubilees: 40 victories for United Kingdom, 10th season Finland joins an EGP tournament, 40th podium for Imre Leader (18-10-12), 4000 EGP points for Sweden.
  • In Oslo, Oskar Eklund became the 4th Swedish player to win a tournament, but the first who did this outside Sweden. He is the 55th player to win an European Grand Prix tournament.

Five players finished with 5 wins: Jan de Graaf, Patrick Aubroeck, Tom Schotte, Albert Kortendijk and Erwin van den Berg.

Best Lady was Belgian  Frauke Van de Moortel.

Quite a number of junior players scored 3 points, but Anouk de Vries and Anne Dorbeck qualified for the Junior final. That game was won by Anne Dorbeck, 22-42.
