Report by Benkt Steentoft:
Five Othello players played at the Lund Open in the city library. Everything went very smoothly and virtually all beat all.
Kim Freiburghaus played very well at his first ever Othello tournament. My games against Daniel and Daniel were fun, not only because I won :-). Kim won against Daniel Rignell and looked to have a win against the other Daniel too. Robin defeated me in a beautiful but cruel way. The highlight of the tournament, however, was the game Daniel against Daniel. Despite the fact that they both have played since ancient times, they've never even met. Both are also known to use their time "to the max". Which one of them lost the most tournaments on time is hard to say, but this game Daniel Rignell had 6 seconds left and Daniel Turunens time disappeared into timespace.

38th Meijin-SenLocation: Sendai, Japan
Date: March 18-19th Link: JOA website, Meijin FB Meijin-Sen is one of the strongest and most prestigious tournaments in the Othello World. The 2016 Meijin, Masaya Kasai, declined to play at the WOC in Mito. Therefore the non-Japanese have not personally encountered the strength of his play, but he will be the man to beat at this 38th Meijin. But, Othello Japan has so many great names. Last year's Female Meijin, Hisako Kinoshita, did so well at the WOC. She almost qualified for the semi-finals. I was very sad that she did not make it, but maybe this year in Ghent? I am a great fan of her. |

Shahar Laufer wins Kfar-Saba children open, under 10Location: Kfar-Saba. Israel
Date: March 18th Tourney format: 7 rounds Report by: Leonid Shifman We wanted to hold a tournament to attract new players, held a presentation of the game at school and acted through parents, but as a result, only one newcomer appeared at the tournament... In addition, we invited some already experienced players for comparison, but they probably just got scared. In the end, it turned out a small tournament (U10) for little ones. The results were absolutely predictable and did not surprise anyone... Michael Shifman wins Kfar-Saba children's Purim tournamentLocation: Kfar-Saba. Israel
Date: March 13th Report by: Leonid Shifman We wanted to gather all our best children on Purim, partly it was successfuly, but still 3-4 players could decorate the tournament. Danielle unexpectly lost the starting game and eventually took the second place, avoiding a principled game with Micky, who beat everyone, including Yoav (see photo) in the final round, explaining him that Othello is not chess (Yoav is a prize-winner of the Israeli Chess Championship in his age group), then you need sometimes a little to think... Yusuke Takanashi wins 20th Shinagawa Super League
Location: Shinagawa, Japan
Date: March 5th
Format: 7 rounds Swiss, 20 minutes per player
Tie-breaker: standings of the past Super Leagues
Report by: Takeshi Murakami
12 qualified players participated in this prestigious tournament. After round 3 only two players, Takanashi and Nakajima, were left undefeated, to play in the 4th round. In a very close endgame Nakajima took a corner and flipped the diagonal. Only, he forgot to flip the last disc on that line! According to the special rule applied to this tournament, two minutes was subtracted from the remaining time on Nakajima's clock as the penalty for making an illegal move. But Nakajima had had less than a minute on his clock! Takanashi was thus declared winner on the spot, without filling up the remaining squares. He went on undefeated for the rest of the tournament. It was his fourth victory in a row at the Super Leagues!

8x7 Othello, the Suekuni opening? On Facebook I found this picture of Makoto Suekuni, about to make his first move in a game of 8x7 Othello against Hisako Kinoshita. I suppose the board belongs to Hisako's daughters.
When I was Japan I saw kids play 6x6 Othello but I have never before seen the 8x7. I can sort of understand the look on Makoto's face: how to tackle this lopsided dilemma? |
