Tom Schotte asks, "did you know?"'
- Takuji Kashiwabara won his 10th European Grand Prix series, 6 in a row. Impressive!
- Belgium participated its 100th EGP tournament
- Linda Praseptyo is now the lady with the most EGP participations (21)
- Roel Hobo is no longer the player with the lowest success rate in winning an EGP tournament amongst former winners (2,78% now - 2 out of 72). The 'honour' is for Emmanuel Lazard (2,17% - 1 out of 46). Three players have a perfect score: Tetsuya Nakajima, Keita Ohmori and Takashi Yamakawa. All participated and won one tournament. The most impressive score comes from Michele Borassi: He won 60% (9 out of 15).
- Roel Hobo becomes the 4th organiser to win 'his' European Grand Prix tournament (18 players). Tom Schotte (33 players), Marc Tastet (21 players) and Milosz Cupial (5 players) are the other three.
- Sweden now has the largest tournament attendance in the last 10 editions (32.1). It has passed The Netherlands (31.9). Belgium is 3rd (30.6) and can take the lead if 45 players attend next year's EGP tournament - which is rather unlikely
- Kunihiko Tanida nearly became the 'oldest player to step up the podium for the first time'. At the age of 49 and 229 days he's only 90 days younger than Ian Turner at the time he got 2nd in Athens.
- It took Roel Hobo 7 years and 349 to win another tournament. He's now 5th in this ranking.
- Francesco Marconi still tops this statistic with a waiting period of 12 years and 230 days. 21 (out of 54) former tournament winners would break this record winning a tournament today. Fortunately for Francesco only some of them are still playing tournaments.
- Only Dominique Penloup (41) was older than Roel Hobo (37) when winning his 2nd EGP tournament.
World Othello Championship Swiss ExpertMost of the National Championships have been played, the European Grand Prix has finished, team Japan for the World's has been selected. All focus is on Mito, who will be the next World Champion Othello?
Sometimes you have to look back to move forward and let past performances inspire you to play your best game. Tom Schotte sent me an interesting list of WOC Swiss Experts that he started years ago for Othello Wiki Book Project. This is a list of players who managed to score an average of 9 or higher taking in account their 3 best Swiss performances at the World Othello Championship. The maximum score is 39 (3 x 13), but no player yet managed to win all 13 games in the Swiss rounds (before semifinal and final) at 3 WOC tournaments. Note: for players that played at the WOC for different countries, the country code at the current WOF ratinglist is given. |
World Othello Championship HistoryEach year Emmanuel Lazard sets up a website for the WOC live action and the website disappears after a year as the domain is not renewed.
Now he has recreated all his WOC websites and used the old Papp files to create new full websites for former WOC's. If he did not have the Papp files, static pages give the standings. All results, standings, crosstables AND replayable individual games can be found here. Great job Emmanuel, thanks! |

European Grand Prix Champion 2016: Takuji Kashiwabara
Tournament winner: Roel Hobo
The EGP Amsterdam was won by Roel Hobo in a very exciting final. Roel won the first game but the second game was for Nicky. Nicky chose to play black in the third game as he had won with black in the second game. But this time the win was for white and Roel won the EGP.
As the first game of the final was beeing played most of the attention went to the 1-game playoff for third and fourth place for there was a lot at stake. Tom Schotte played against Kunihiko Tanida. Tom needed a win to become European Grand Prix Champion 2016. All Takuji Kashiwabara could do was sit and wait. Tom Schotte lost the game and finished as runner-up of the EGP 2016. European Champion for the 10th time: Takuji Kashiwabara!!

Ben Seeley: "My Self-Assessment for the 2016 World Othello Championship"
Ben Seeley posted an interesting article at the USOA website. Below you can read the first paragraphs. There is much more and so I advise you to read the full article.
In some past years I had projections for other players but this year I think it’s the least I’ve ever known about other players so I’m going in partially blind.
But I know myself pretty well at this point so I figured maybe that’s an interesting topic for some people who want the latest gossip. And since I’ve got some of the best gossip on me- here is some personal gossip!
To start with I think this is the least seriously I am taking any world championship I have played in yet. This is mostly because after last year and a couple of other previous World Championships I realized how much it does ruin a lot of the fun of the world championship to take it super-seriously (duh). It ruined the fun even to the point where, even if I had won the WOC last year, I think I would have regretted having taken the tournament so seriously.
And don’t get me wrong, I still had a lot of fun in last year’s WOC, even with getting sick layered into my experience! But I realized I never wanted to have that experience again.
Alessandro Di Mattei wins Città di Roma
Location: Rome, Italy
Date: September 4th Link: FB photo album, FNGO website The FNGO decided to donate the entree fees to theRed Cross to help the victims of the earthquake that recently hit southeast Italy. Winner of this tourmament was Alessandro Di Mattei. Second place for Michele Diodati and a very smart third place for junior player Valentino Giannini. |
Team Japan for next World Othello ChampionshipBy winning the Ouza-Sen, Yusuke Takahashi qualified for the Japanese team at the WOC. I think it is wonderful that the reigning champion gets a chance to defend his title. Team Japan for Mito: Yusuke Takanashi (winner Ouza-Sen), Yasushi Nagano (winner All Japan Championship), Nobuaki Mitsuya (runner-up Ouza-Sen), Hisako Kinoshita (female Meijin) and Masaki Wada (youth Meijin). This year's winner of the Meijin, Masaya Kasai has chosen not to play at the WOC.

Tom Schotte wins Belgian Championship
Location: Zonhoven, Belgium
Date: September 4th Link: FB event, BOA website Here you can see the list of champions dating back to 1979. Tom Schotte won the 2016 Championship and so won 8 times and currently has a winning streak of 4. Very nice result for Tom, but he did not feel too happy. Tom did a lot to promote Othello in Belgium and today only 4 players were present at the Belgian Championship. |
Belgian Othello Grand Prix 2016: winner Tom Schotte, Brecht Van Damme runner-up, Nick Reunes 3rd, Rosalinde de Boer best lady.
Foreigners Grand Prix 2016: winner Albert Kortendijk, Roel Hobo runner-up, Jan de Graaf 3rd, Linda Praseptyo best lady.

Yusuke Takanashi wins 11th Ouza-Sen
Location: Mito, Japan
Date: September 4th Format: 6 rounds and final Link: JOA website (ranking per round, report), blog Takeshi Murakami At Ouza, before the games started, Kasai’s intention to decline his invitation to WOC was announced by an official of Japan Othello Association. The official also informed the players that that would give them a better chance of qualifying for the Worlds as top two players of Ouza, and maybe the third player if Nagano advanced to the final, would be invited to play in Mito in November.
Yusuke Takanashi won all his games in the rounds and qualified for the final. His opponent was Nobuaki Mitsuya who had won 5/6. Yusuke won the final and won the title undefeated. Last year he played a draw against Kazuki Okamoto but this year Yusuke had a perfect score. With the extra spot on team Japan at stake, this was quite an exciting tournament. As many as 6 players out of the 66 present, finished with 5/6. Just a few discs more could have won them WOC qualification. Ouza: Yusuke Takanashi Female Ouza: Yukiko Tatsumi Youth Ouza: Keisuke Fukuchi |
