Erwin van den Berg wins playoff for spot on Dutch WOC Team The Dutch Grand Prix 2013 was won by Nicky van den Biggelaar and Roel Hobo ended second well ahead of the other competitors. Both players qualified for the Dutch WOC-team. Jiska Helmes is the female player on the Dutch team. Four other players, Erwin van den Berg, Patrick Aubroeck, Jan de Graaf and Sido Helmes qualified for the double round robin play-off. Patrick Aubroeck had to cancel the day before the playoff and his place was taken by Martin Fransen. I think it is a pitty that this means that the Dutch 2013 Champion will not play at the World Othello Championship.
Erwin van den Berg and Sido Helmes both had 4 wins but Erwin's disccount was better. Good luck in Stockholm to the Dutch team: Erwin, Roel, Nicky and Jiska!! European Grand Prix Rules on Eurothfed mailinglist
Dear Othello players,
the ones who followed the last EGP events well know that it didn't end with the last tournament in Paris. In fact a regulated question didn't permit to establish immediately the winner. The question was about the number of points to assign to Kashiwabara after the final: one point affirmed that in case of drawn play-offs (1,5-1,5) the sum of the points should be shared between the two players (it means (200+140)/2 = 170), a second point affirmed that the rule was changed some years ago and for the second place only 140 points are assigned. In the first case Kashiwabara would be the winner, in the second Marconi.
A day search among the emails of the last years, confirmed that the rule has been discussed but never voted and, so, never changed. It means that in the last EGP tournament Kashiwabara takes 170 points and gets the first position. Following there's a short history about the question.
In 2006, in the Cambridge EGP tournament, the final for the third place was between Marconi and Hobo, Marconi won, but he did with a drawn (1,5-1,5), so finally he got 75 points instead of the expected 90. Not knowing the rule, a clarification was asked, and after the explanation (it's a rule born with the EGP) started a discussion (on the British mailing list) if the rule had to change or not: the objection was that if a final gives a winner, the two players are separated in the final rank and should receive a different number of points instead of sharing their sum. Informally there was a general agreement to change the rule but, of course, it couldn't be done for that current year but only for the following one after a discussion and a vote by all the federations. But after the end of that edition of the EGP, it hasn't been done, as is possible to see on the European mailing list (this could be consulted accessing the site http://groups.yahoo.com/). This means that even there's a memory of the intention to change the rule, the rule has never changed and the old one still lives and the first two players, in the Paris tournament, shares their EGP points.
Beside this topic, I believe that is very urgent to have a collection of all the rules of the EGP published on internet. Some months ago I’ve sent to some council representatives a draft copy for an informal discussion before its official launch and vote by all the federations. I think it's urgent to make it official before the next edition of the EGP. Is what I'll do in the next days.
Sincerely,
F. Marconi

Hi all,
following the last messages, I send to all the European federations the draft copy of the rules for the EGP. They are a simple collection of all the rules approved up to now. Please read it and send me yours notes. I'd like to final version of it during the meeting we'll have at the WOC in Stockholm. Please, the federations that probably won't be present at the next WOC, send your vote by email on this list. Thanks F. Marconi |

Patrick Aubroeck wins 15th Dutch National ChampionshipCountry: The Netherlands, Zwolle
Date: 08/09/2013 Tourney format : 7 rounds |
|
With the absence of 5-times Dutch champion Nicky van den Biggelaar the battle field promised to be very exciting. Patrick Aubroeck has used this chance to become Dutch Othello champion for the first time. Four players were present with a rating above 2000: Albert Kortendijk (2049), Patrick Aubroeck (2049), Tom Schotte (2048) and Roel Hobo (2035). Both Patrick and Roel started the tournament well with three consecutive wins while Tom (1/3) and Albert (0/3) missed their start completely. Roel beat Patrick in the 4th round and seemed to be on his way for a second national title.
Patrick recovered well by beating Jan and Martin in round five and six while Roel lost to Tim and Tom. This resulted in Patrick being in sole lead after round six. He secured the title in the 7th round with a win over Albert. |
HOBO Roel 41 - 23 GRAAF Jan de Dutch Championship 2013, round 1 |
HOBO Roel 38 - 26 AUBROECK Patrick Dutch Championship 2013, round 4 |
Dutch Grand Prix 2013 winner: Nicky van den Biggelaar
The Dutch Grand Prix 2013 was won by Nicky van den Biggelaar for the 10th consecutive time. This means his first win was in 2004 and since then he has won this competition every year.
Roel Hobo ended second well ahead of the other competitors. Both players are qualified for the World Othello Championship 2013 in Stockholm. Four other players (Erwin van den Berg, Patrick Aubroeck, Jan de Graaf and Sido Helmes) will play a double round robin on Sunday September 15th for the third ticket in the Dutch team. This means that the Dutch champion, Patrick Aubroeck, is not sure to be part of the team. Both Albert Kortendijk (for the play-off) and Linda Praseptyo (for the ladies play-off) declined, so that Jiska Helmes automatically qualified for the ladies spot on the Dutch team. |

The best Japanese players came together for a high standard tournament aiming for a place in the Japanese team for the World Othello Championship 2013 and the Othello World Cup 2014. It was an exciting tournament with two players who remained unbeaten in the preliminary rounds. Both Takashi Yamakawa and Makoto Suekuni won their 6 games.
In the final Takashi Yamakawa was the strongest player and won with with 26 - 38 against former world champion Makoto Suekuni. The game was broadcasted live and could be reviewed at any time. Of every round one interesting game was broadcasted as well.
Takashi Yamakawa has proven to be competitive throughout the years. Unfortunately he had not yet been able to win a major tournament. He is currently #7 in the world (2431), while Makoto Suekuni is #6 (2434).
3 times world champion Yusuke Takanashi was eliminated for the final early on in the tournament losing to Kenta Tominaga in the first round (21-43). Tomoya Toda lost in the deciding 6th round to Takashi Yamakawa (29-35). Worth mentioning are the results of Keita Ohmori (#6) and Takeshi Murakami (#7), who just came back from Europe after the Paris European Grand Prix tournament, probably facing some jet lag.
