The format of this EGP tournament is 9 rounds, semifinals and final.
Three Frenchmen travelled to Athens for the second stage of the 2017 EGP: Takuji Kashiwabara (3rd place in Prague), Marc Tastet (5th place in Prague) and Stéphane Nicolet. No other foreigners present at this tournament. Their Greek opponents are: Lydia Papadaki, Andreas Litsas, Georgios Mitsis, Christina Mitsi, Irene Melanouri, Christos Katsionis and Nikolaos Karamanos. A lucky draw for Takuji Kashiwabara in round 2 against Andreas Litsas. Andreas missed the winning move 58 a3 and played the drawing move 58 a2. He still had 9 minutes on the clock, but must have miscounted the endresult. Not so much luck for Takuji in round 3, that was a 41-23 win for Stéphane Nicolet. Stéphane won all his games on the first day. Marc Tastet won 6 games and played a draw against Takuji in round 6. A nice third place for Christina Mitsi. Fourth place for Takuji who won 2 games and played 4 draws! The final for the best beginner finished in a win for Lydia Papadaki who won 37-27 against Christos Katsionis. |

As several Greek players could not attend on Sunday, the tournament director has decided to skip the last two rounds and continue the tournament with the semifinals. I heard it said that according to Tom Schotte's EGP stats, Christina is the first female player to finish in top 4 of EGP tournament of the second time.

final game 1 comment by Marc.
I was planning to play something like : 47.h7 g8 f8 e8 e7 c8 b8 a7 55.a2 b2 a1 ps h1 ps h2 g2, with a comfortable parity win (even if White plays the last move of the game). But I realised that White could play instead: 47.h7 g8 f8 e7 e8 c8 b8 a7 and then 55.a2 wouldn't flip diagonally (the diagonal between b3 and g8 being all white). And after 47.h7 g8 e7 f8 e8 c8 b8 a7 there is the same problem (the diagonal between b3 and g8 being all white). So I tried something else, which didn't work either. |

I had the idea to play 50h7 because it was locally better to have White h7 and Black h8 rather than Black h7 and White h8. However, I noticed that this might change if White would turn more discs on the diagonal when playing h8. For example, 50.d1 c1 b2 f1 g1 a1 b1 a2 a3 h7 h8 would be good for White. But it's just when Black played 53.a1 that I realised that after 54.b1, 55a2 would seal off the f1-g1 region for Black, meaning that I wouldn't have parity there! So I tried 54.a2 but I wouldn't get a wedge on the northern edge thus leaving too many discs to Black... |
