EGP Berlin 2017
July 8-9
winner: Matthias Berg (DEU)
European Grand Prix 2017, Berlin
The main problem of the EGP in my view is the dwindling number of players that is interested to play at least 4 EGP's in a year. This year we have Kashiwabara, Tastet, Berg and Leader. In 2016 we had just 3: Kashiwabara, Schotte and Tastet. In 2015 Kashiwabara, Voracek, Marconi, Tastet and Leader. In 2014 Kashiwabara, Tastet, Leader and Marconi. In 2013 Kashiwabara, Marconi, Odegard, Tastet and Hobo. In 2012 Kashiwabara, Tastet, Marconi, Hobo and Fransen.
I think the EGP is the engine to boost Othello in Europe. Two top priorities are: attract more players to their national EGP and get more players to play at least 4 EGP's a year. It will make the tourneys more interesting, the fight for the championship will be harder. There is a lot we can learn from the players that have been around for years like Takuji Kashiwabara, Marc Tastet, Imre Leader and Francesco Marconi. Players love to share their expertise and their love of the game with others. The Othello crowd is small in Europe, but great fun to hang out with.
Take a look at Tom Schotte's EGP Statistics page for more numbers.

Stage 6 of the 2017 EGP will take place at the end of this week, in Berlin. Before the Aland tournament, I wrote that I thought the EGP 2017 would go to either Kashiwabara, Tastet or Berg. But then, Imre Leader won the Aland tournament and he seems to be in great form. Were he to win Berlin and then Ghent.......... I don't want to knock any player off my top 3 list. I will just make it a top 4. Good luck to Marc Tastet, Matthias Berg, Imre Leader and the other two registered players, Sverre Tvedt and Stefan Murawski. Takuji Kashiwabara was stopped at the Lufthansa check-in counter on Friday, he had failed to notice that his passport expired a month ago, no EGP for him this weekend.
Matthias Berg lobbied hard to get the EGP to Germany and the first German EGP was in 2008. Matthias hoped to inspire players to take part in German and foreign EGP's. This EGP just 1 other German player will show up at the Berlin EGP.

Mathhias Berg and Marc Tastet both won their semifinal in 2 games. Imre Leader won the playoff for 3rd/4th place against Sverre Tvedt. Matthias Berg won the final against Marc Tastet in 2 games. Both games finished with a 2-disc advantage for Matthias.
With this tournament victory Matthias takes the lead in the 2017 EGP. The same best of 4 score for Takuji but 20 points less in total score. Too bad Takuji missed out on the Berlin EGP, but Ghent and Paris tournaments promiss fireworks. Marc Tastet played and lost 4 finals this year, 2 more finals to go and another 400 points..... go for it Marc!
