Andrey Malnev wins Israeli Championship

Location: Israel
Date: June 24
Tourney format: 5 rounds

Congratulations to Andrey Malnev he won the championship with 4 wins and 1 loss against the runner-up Alexey Miller. Alexey also scored 4 wins, he lost against Leonid Shifman in the final round.

A very rare, perhaps unprecedented, incident occurred in the game Ilya - Leonid. Leonid expired time - no, it's not such a rare case - and got 2 extra minutes. Then Ilya expired time and also received 2 additional minutes. And then... Ilya expired time again, but Leonid managed to make all the moves and won on the board... (note: by the rule it was a 33-31 win for Ilya)
Final result:
  1. MALNEV, Andrey, IL,  4, 226
  2. MILLER, Alexey, IL,  4, 162
  3. SHIFMAN, Leonid, IL,  3, 207

Edmund Yiu wins US National Open, Chicago Area

Location: Chicago, USA
Date: June 17-18

Tournament format will be based on # of players and player preferences. We will probably try to maximize player participation from those who wish to play the most. But you do not have to play both days. We will announce tourney format later. If you have an issue or question about it let us know and we will announce it sooner.

This tournament is scheduled to rank 2nd behind the NYC tournament for filling team spots for the USA Team at the World Championship in Ghent, Belgium.

Also like last year, if both players in a game wish to play with an XOT starting position, they can do so. If either player in a game wants to play with the classic starting position, then that will be the starting position for the game.
Edmund Yiu has won the National Open in a small field of four this weekend.  He won 11 of his 12 games in the quadruple round robin format. Only 1 loss, against David Rockwell in round 9.

Michael Shifman wins 1st Israel Othello Children's Championship (U15)

Location: Israel
Date: June 17
Tourney format: 5 rounds
Report by: Leonid Shifman

We held many children's tournaments during the school year and selected the 8 strongest children to play in final..

Micky Shifman won all his games, but it was no easy walk... He won a very close game with Danielle, she won all her other games and finished 2nd. In the last round Nimrod Presente won a very hard game against Yaron Chereshnya and he took the 3rd place. Micky, Danielle and Nimrod are 11 y. o. and they are classmates. Yaron is best from U10.
Final result:
  1. SHIFMAN, Michael, IL, 5, 192
  2. YOSIFOVICH, Danielle, IL, 4, 221
  3. PRESENTE, Nimrod, IL, 3, 190
  4. SHRIEBMAN, Or, IL, 2, 158
  5. CHERESHNYA, Yaron, IL, 2, 155
  6. LAUFER, Shahar, IL, 2, 140

Karsten Feldborg wins Greve Cup 2017

Karsten lost his game in round 5 against Henrik Vallund. But in the final Henrik lost 19-45 against Karsten. This was the third win in a row in the Dansk Othello Grand Prix 2017 for Karsten. With just 2 more tourneys to go, I think it is a safe bet to claim GP 2017 for Karsten.

EGP Åland 2017, June 17-18

For info and results, check our EGP Åland page.

Marc Tastet and Takuji Kashiwabara played in all four EGP stages that were played so far this year, Prague, Athens, Barcelona and Oslo. Matthias Berg only missed the Athens stage.  Two stages for Imre Leader, he played in Prague and Oslo and now will play his third EGP of this season. Stéphane Nicolet played in Athens and now is up for his second stage. Also so far two stages for Tomáš Douda, Martin Fransen and Roel Hobo, but they have not signed up for the Åland tournament.

Three more stages to go after this tournament and ofcourse any player can still win if he/she wins the last three tournamens in Berlin, Ghent and Paris. I think the EGP battle for the title of European Champion will be decided between Takuji Kashiwabara (10 x winner), Marc Tastet (4x winner) and Matthias Berg.

Francesco Marconi wins Gran Maestro 2017

Location: Rome, Italy
Date: June 11
Tourney format: 7 rounds

Links: winners since 1985

Why does Alessandro di Mattei show us that he has 2 perfect sets of 5 fingers? That is because this is the 10th time that Francesco Marconi won the Italian Gran Maestro. Francesco did it in style, he won all his games. Congrats to a great player! Francesco won the GM for the first time as far back as 1988. Last time he won was in 2006. And now that big tropy is his again!

Second place for  Alessandro Di Mattei who had 5 wins and third place for Paolo Scognamiglio with 4.5 points

Stéphane Nicolet wins Ile de France 5

Location: Paris, France
Date: June 10
Tourney format: 5 rounds XOT opening

Report by Marc Tastet

This is the first XOT tournament held in Paris, (there were XOT tournaments during summer camps).

For each round, the program of Matthias Berg was used, available here (thank you Matthias). This program (in Java) makes it possible to randomly select an opening from the small (evaluation between -1 and +1) or the large list (evaluation between -2 and +2). Before each round, everyone was allowed to put a veto on the displayed position. In that case  we tried another starting position. In each round, the selected opniing was the same for all players. This formula was, it seems, appreciated by the participants.

Congratulations to Stéphane Nicolet, who won all his games. I think this is the first time that 3 generations of the Ovion family participated in the same tournament! In addition, we were pleased to welcome Valentin, who plays on the Internet but was eager to move from the virtual world to the real world.
